Swedish "dancebands"
Odd postcards from the 1970´s

There are many magnificent postcards of Swedish, so called dancebands, from the years around and after 1970. Just look at their outfits! I think these cards will become very popular among postcard collectors in the future! The cards have already been very much discussed about on the internet. It all started with this card showing the group Gert Jonnys and if you search for "Gert Jonnys" on Google you will find most of these discussions.

The card that started it all...

These Swedish groups played (and still play) at public dances, clubs, folk parks and discos, but I don´t think they wear these incredible outfits any longer. It's hard to describe how they sound, the music and songs doesn´t sound like any other music. These bands were all part of a genre that in Swedish is called "dansband", which I have translated to "danceband". Maybe the name "dansband" says it all, they played music for people to dance to all night long, sometimes four to five hours every night.

I think all these bands almost sound the same way. They all have a male lead singer with a very nasal voice and a basic backing band. You have to hear them to understand how they sound. I am not so keen on that type of music, but all these groups sure were, and still are, very popular all over Sweden! There are very famous bands like Thorleifs and Vikingarna (The Wikings) that have been touring Sweden for over 40 years now and they still are as popular as ever!

There are thousands of different postcards showing Swedish dancebands, one collector already has 9000 different postcards and the Postal Musuem in Stockholm recently had an exhibition showing cards from this genre. Most major newspapers in Sweden has also had articles about this new "cult" around the Swedish dancebands.

Below you can find a tour with postcards of  several groups from this era, including another stunning card of Gert Jonnys! Hope you will enjoy the tour!

Gert Jonnys again! They later changed name to Freddys and they are still active. This wonderful card was printed when the band celebrated their 10th Anniversary.

I have never heard Jan-Werners music but they were probably very popular in the 1970´s

Jahn Rondhos - "Playing modern music"

Lennes orchestra on a wonderful photo from the 1970´s!
The former owner of the postcard has written on the back:
"Jätte Braa" which in English means "Very, very Gooood"

Curt Morténz - "The orchestra that plays nice dance music"

Eddies - "We play old, middle age and modern dance music."

Kurt Reines - "We play cultural dance music"

Lars-Olov Stenborg
